

That's 8.5 code changes per hour or 204 changes every day. The average number of changes accepted into the kernel per hour over the last year was 8.5. How much? In 2015-16, there were 7.8 patches per hour. The rate of Linux development continues to accelerate, as does the number of developers and companies. Microsoft, while still contributing, is no longer a top contributor. The top 10 companies sponsoring Linux kernel development in the last year include Intel, Red Hat, Linaro, IBM, Samsung, SUSE, Google, AMD, Renesas, and Mellanox. Of these, 1,670 contributed for the first time, or about a third of contributors. Since last year, over 4,300 developers from more than 500 companies have contributed to the kernel. Since 2005 and adoption of Git version control system, 15,637 developers from over 1,400 companies have contributed to the Linux kernel. This report was released at the invitation-only Linux Kernel Summit in Prague, Czech Republic.
